Summary: A follow-up to this. This is the way their story sort of ends and sort of begins.
[College AU] Lee Hyukjae travels over eleven thousand miles across the world and leaves his heart behind. Lee Donghae travels under a hundred. Kim Jongwoon prefers not to count.
Now he has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing. People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.
Donghae and Jessica are cute together for approximately thirty-eight days, fifteen hours, and nineteen minutes, after which she decides that they'd be better off as friends and Donghae spends a week sobbing helplessly into Hyukjae's shirts.
"Seriously, man. This is weird," Hyukjae says finally, putting an end to the waterworks. "And look. She has a sister! Krystal! Equally as hot!"
Hyukjae crosses his fingers behind his back while Yesung muffles a laugh. "Really."
Hyukjae glides through a year of Calculus with Yesung's help.
"An A, Yesung," Hyukjae crows one day as he helps Yesung clear out their mailbox for the thousandth time. After the M&D concert, Yesung became a campus hit overnight, featuring prominently on several blogs and Facebook groups. They'd received a steady stream of love letters ever since.
"Any chocolate in this batch?"
"No. And if there had been, Eunhyuk, it would be mine."
“Smelly. Actually, speaking of which, I think your socks are actually past the point at which they can be washed, now. They reek. Please buy new ones.”
“Oh shut up.”
Campus housing finally finds out about the Mutant Turtle. And forbids it. Somehow, Hyukjae suspects that Heechul is involved.
"Do you want to just get an apartment. The three of us," Hyukjae splutters when he sees Yesung moping helplessly over the letter, petting the turtle's back.
One night three weeks into sophomore year, Hyukjae finds that he can't sleep. He stumbles out of bed and peers into Yesung's room. Comatose. Of course.
He elbows Yesung out of the way and snuggles in next to him. When Yesung moans blearily, Hyukjae kicks him hard in the shins.
"Don’t whine. You owe me for all those nights last year."
“There are like five rooms in this apartment. Why mine," but Yesung turns over obligingly, clearing a side of the bed.
Yesung's back is warm. Very, very warm.
Donghae somehow becomes one of Heechul’s best friends.
“Actually, I don’t really think he knows what the word friend means,” Donghae moans over his coffee. “I think he uses it as a substitute for slave. Like, a more politically correct version.” He shakes his head, picks up his sketchbook, and starts drawing, eye fixed on the fountain and at—
Hyukjae gapes. “Donghae, why do we still stalk Jessica Jung? I mean, aren’t you still on speaking terms?”
“I don’t see how that changes anything,” Donghae says frostily.
“Oh wow. Sometimes I think you’re weirder than Yesung, actually.”
Somehow, Hyukjae can’t believe they make it through four years of each other. But they do.
Author's Note: Even though this is the end of Yesung, Donghae, and Hyukjae, everything from this fic has its roots in something that happened four years earlier: Heechul came, saw, and conquered. Apparently by “never again” I only meant “until next time."
